About Us

Dorothymae (Dottie Mae) & Harold Groves met in Washington DC and were wed in 1958.  That marriage has blessed them with four children and seven grand children.  They are originally from Texas, but have made Kansas City their home.

Dottie Mae and Harold are true adventurers and have traveled the world.  Not only did they live in Israel in the early 80's, they even spent three months back packing all over Europe in 1983!

Dottie Mae loves the exciting and eccentric, although she also has a softer side where she reveals her enthusiasm for quilting.  She has received numerous awards for her quilting talents.  In 1969 Dottie Mae wrote a book about how to restore antique trunks, quite possibly her first "peak" at the entrepreneur world.  "Her laugh is frequent and contagious, symbolic of how she enjoys life." says Tom Stagman of the Kansas City Star.

Harold's passion has always been cars.  He loves collecting and restoring the "oldies".  Some of his collection include a 1950 pink Studebaker that he bought Dottie Mae for Valentine's Day, a 1956 Dodge, a 1958 Edsel, a 1959 Cadillac and a 1951 Henry J that he bought in 1953.  The Grove's spend a lot of their "free" time attending and competing in car shows across the nation.   Harold's car collection has become quite decorated with awards over the years!

The Groves' true calling has always been entrepreneurial adventures.  Their first store was a hobby shop in Texas where they specialized in flowers made from feathers.  And now they have Dottie Mae's Costumes in Kansas City, Missouri.  They have also compiled over 1000 Kansas City Star quilt patterns into books that they offer to the public.

When you see Dottie Mae and Harold you can always EXPECT to see drama, lots of color, eccentricity or just plain silly!  The couple's trademark has become their costumes, their wigs, in general the way they get into the "theme" of things!  In fact, Dottie Mae recently won the Hazel Ford Award for the Most Enthusiastic Lady for Edsels!  Every where they go, there is a theme, and frequently they are giving things away to go with the theme.  They may dress as Life Savers and give away Life Saver candies, "Let Dottie Mae's be Your Life Saver".  Or something as simple as dressing in 50's attire for an Edsel Convention.  No one has ever accused the Groves' of being boring, and you won't see the same outfit twice!

"Do you always dress the part?" people ask Dottie Mae.  Her thought -- "Why not!"  It's fun, it brings laughter and smiles, it breaks up a boring day and hey, someone MIGHT just ask, "Where did you get that?"  And the Grove's are ALWAYS prepared with business cards and promotional products.  SMART BUSINESS!
